M J Forster is a Northumbrian painter known primarily for his bold original watercolour landscapes of Northern England and Scotland. He has always been a professional artist and opened his first studio gallery in Hexham Northumberland in 1997. The artist also paints and draws in other mediums across a range of local subjects from his studio above the market place in the town of Hexham in the heart of Northumberland’s Tyne Valley.
His original landscape paintings are painted in both traditional and contemporary style and are in a constant state of metamorphosis. In 2008 his traditional watercolour landscape style developed into his unique and immediately recognizable Überpainting genre. An Überpainting can only be painted in watercolour, similar to a silk screen print they are built from the application of separate flat washes.
Matthew has exhibited extensively with galleries across Britain and has participated at over 50 UK and European art and trade fairs. His original paintings have been received all over the world and his first retrospective book illustrating his broad depth of ideas and techniques was published in 2014.
The Northumberland artist will continue to develop and refine his original paintings of the Northumbrian coastline and its castles such as Lindisfarne on Holy Island, Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh. In Northumberland’s rugged interior lies Hadrian’s Wall built along the volcanic outcrop of the Whinsill its prominent features of Craglough and Steelrigg are perfect subject matter for his fluid free flowing hand. Painted in both his traditional and contemporary styles these atmospheric and affordable original watercolours will enhance any interior.
More recently the artist has focused on his abstract and geometric work with particular attention given to colour theory and pattern making. He has recently launched a surface pattern design studio called Ombre. The design range can be applied across a multitude of applications see www.ombrecollection.com
